The instructors on the mat

Every class at Pembroke Pines Self Defense is led by an instructor trained in the Valente Brothers curriculum — the same syllabus, terminology and standards from the first white-belt lesson onward.

Teaching approach

One curriculum, taught the same way by everyone

Our instructors teach a sequenced syllabus rather than a personal style, so a student who trains on Tuesday morning and Friday evening receives one consistent education. Technique is introduced progressively with cooperative partners, and instruction covers the behavioral and philosophical side of Jujutsu alongside the physical.

Fourth-degree black belt and founder of Valente Brothers Pembroke Pines, with more than 30 years of Jujutsu practice and decades of teaching experience.

Martial arts have been a central part of my life since I began training at four years old. My early background was primarily in the striking arts, and I later added wrestling while attending high school. Throughout my college years, I continued actively training in martial arts, including boxing and kickboxing.

In 1993, I watched Royce Gracie demonstrate the effectiveness of Jujutsu at the first Ultimate Fighting Championship. That moment changed the direction of my martial arts journey. I became determined to find the art he practiced and learn the techniques, principles, and real-world applications that made it so effective.

After graduating from chiropractic school as a chiropractic physician in 1995, I began formally studying Jujutsu. Several years later, I found the Valente Brothers organization and began training through private instruction with my professor. I have now practiced Jujutsu for more than 30 years and remain committed to continually developing my knowledge and abilities.

Today, I serve as the Senior Professor at Valente Brothers Pembroke Pines. Throughout my years of teaching, I have instructed students at every level—from children beginning in the Little Champs program to experienced students in our adult classes. I have also provided self-defense and real-world combat training to members of the military, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other members of our local community.

My background as both a lifelong martial artist and a chiropractic physician has given me a unique understanding of the human body, movement, physical development, and injury prevention. My goal as an instructor is to help every student develop the confidence, awareness, discipline, and practical skills needed to protect themselves and the people they care about.

Black belt instructor who grew up in the Valente Brothers system from the Little Champs program to the adult curriculum.

Jujutsu has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was first brought onto the mat as a baby while my father was training in private lessons, and I began taking formal classes shortly before my third birthday. Since then, I have remained an active and dedicated student of the Valente Brothers system.

I began teaching as a teenager, initially assisting with youth classes and programs. Over time, I gained the experience and proficiency needed to teach youth classes, assist with adult instruction, and conduct private lessons for adult students. In December 2021, I earned my black belt, and I have continued to train, teach, and further develop my understanding of Jujutsu ever since.

Today, I serve as the Head Youth Instructor at Valente Brothers Pembroke Pines. I take great pride in helping children build confidence, discipline, character, and practical self-defense skills.

My experience gives me a unique perspective as an instructor. Before teaching the youth curriculum, I experienced every stage of it as a student. I am one of the few members of the Valente Brothers organization to begin in the Little Champs program, progress all the way to black belt, and continue actively teaching within the system.

I strongly believe that Jujutsu is for everyone. No student should feel limited in their ability to learn, improve, and benefit from the physical, mental, and personal development that Jujutsu can provide.

Kai Berlanga, Youth Instructor at Pembroke Pines Self Defense

Kai Berlanga

Youth Instructor

Two-stripe purple belt youth instructor with more than five years of teaching experience, helping students build confidence and resilience on and off the mat.

I began training in Jujutsu at the age of seven. Like many children, stepping onto the mat for the first time was intimidating, but with the guidance of exceptional instructors, I discovered far more than self-defense. Through years of training, I built the confidence and resilience that helped me overcome challenges with bullying and self-esteem. Those experiences shaped the person I am today and continue to influence the way I teach.

At 15, I was invited to begin assisting with the youth classes, and teaching quickly became just as rewarding as training. Helping students understand each technique deepened my own appreciation for the art while giving me the opportunity to watch their confidence grow. Today, I teach alongside our head instructors with the goal of helping every student become stronger both on and off the mat. Jujutsu changed the course of my life, and I'm passionate about passing those same lessons on to the next generation.

Youth Instructor

Purple belt youth instructor who grew up through the Valente Brothers Little Champs program and now helps children build confidence through Jujutsu.

Jujutsu has been a part of my life since before I could walk. I was first introduced to the art by my older siblings at home and began formally training in the Valente Brothers Little Champs program at three years old. I have continued training ever since and currently hold the rank of purple belt.

In addition to Jujutsu, I spent many years playing competitive travel baseball. Growing up as an athlete taught me the importance of discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and consistent effort—qualities that continue to influence both my training and my approach to teaching.

Today, I train in the adult program as I continue pursuing my black belt and expanding my knowledge of Jujutsu. I am constantly working to improve my technique, deepen my understanding of the art, and become the best I can be.

Because I progressed through the youth program myself, I can closely relate to the experiences and challenges our younger students encounter. I understand that every child learns differently and may require a different approach to build confidence, develop skills, and reach their potential.

Our youth classes encourage students to become better versions of themselves. By facing challenges in a controlled, supportive, and safe environment, children learn how to remain composed, overcome adversity, and continue moving forward. These lessons extend beyond the mat and can help them navigate challenges at school, in sports, at work, and throughout their lives.
