Jujutsu vs Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: what's the difference?

Jujutsu is also spelled jiu-jitsu and jujitsu, and it is closely related to what people call BJJ. Here is what those words mean, how sport BJJ and MMA differ from a complete self-defense curriculum, and how to choose between them.

Is Jujutsu the same as jiu-jitsu?

Essentially, yes — they are spellings of the same word. “Jujutsu” is the traditional Japanese romanization, and it is the spelling our school uses. “Jiu-jitsu”, “jiu jitsu” and “jujitsu” are the spellings that took hold in Brazil and the United States, and “BJJ” is the common abbreviation for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. If you searched for jiu-jitsu classes in Pembroke Pines and landed here, you found the right martial arts school. What matters is not the spelling but the curriculum behind it.

What is the difference between Jujutsu and BJJ?

Modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is largely organized around sport competition: points, positions and submissions under a ruleset, practiced primarily on the ground. Our Jujutsu keeps the older, broader syllabus that BJJ grew out of. Classes cover awareness and avoidance, defense against surprise attacks and striking, the clinch, throws and takedowns, and ground grappling and submissions. Sport BJJ is a demanding, respectable discipline — it is simply a narrower slice of the same tradition.

Does Jujutsu include striking and grappling?

Both! Grappling — clinching, throws, control and submissions — is the backbone of the art. Striking is trained mainly as something you must be able to defend against and neutralize by closing distance and controlling an attacker, rather than as a stand-up fighting game. That combination is what makes the training practical self-defense rather than a single-range sport.

How is Jujutsu different from MMA?

MMA is a professional combat sport contested between trained, similarly sized athletes in a ring, with a referee, weight classes and rules. Self-defense has none of those things. We do not run an MMA gym or train people for cage fights; we teach adults, women and children how to protect themselves against a surprise attack from someone who may be bigger and stronger, and then how to leave safely.

Is Jujutsu good for self-defense?

Jujutsu is one of the most reliable martial arts, because it is built on leverage, timing and position rather than size, speed or aggression. That is precisely why it works for a beginner in their fifties, a teenager, or a woman defending against a larger opponent. The material is trained progressively with cooperative partners, so it stays learnable without a sports background.

Is Jujutsu better for self-defense than sport BJJ?

For self-defense specifically, a complete curriculum has the advantage. A sport-focused academy will make you an excellent grappler, but by design it spends little time on standing defense, strikes, weapons awareness or multiple-attacker considerations. If your goal is competition, look for a competition team. If your goal is protecting yourself and your family, a self-defense curriculum is the better fit.

Jujutsu, jiu-jitsu and BJJ questions

Is this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

We teach Valente Brothers Jujutsu, which shares its lineage and much of its technical vocabulary with what most people call Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ. The difference is scope: our curriculum is a complete self-defense system that also covers standing defense, surprise attacks, defense against striking, clinching, throws and takedowns, alongside ground grappling.

What is the difference between Jujutsu and Jiu-Jitsu?

They refer to the same art. “Jujutsu” is the traditional Japanese romanization and the spelling we use; “Jiu-Jitsu” and “Jiu Jitsu” are the spellings that took hold in Brazil and the United States. If you searched for Jiu-Jitsu in Pembroke Pines and landed here, you are in the right place.

Is the program focused on sport or self-defense?

Self-defense. We are not a tournament-focused academy. We hold sport Jiu-Jitsu and competitive grappling in high regard as disciplines in their own right, but our curriculum is organized around defending yourself in ordinary, unplanned situations.

Is Jujutsu good for self-defense?

Yes — it is one of the most practical martial arts for it, because it relies on leverage, timing and position rather than size, strength or speed. Beginners of any age can train it, and the curriculum is organized around real, unplanned situations rather than a competition ruleset.

Does Jujutsu include striking and grappling?

Both. Grappling — clinching, throws, control and submissions — is the backbone of the art, and striking is trained mainly as something you must be able to defend against and neutralize by closing distance and controlling the attacker. That combination is what separates a complete self-defense curriculum from a single-range sport.

Is Jujutsu better for self-defense than sport BJJ?

For self-defense specifically, a complete curriculum has the advantage: sport BJJ, by design, spends little time on standing defense, strikes, surprise attacks or weapons awareness. If your goal is competition, a competition team is the better fit. If your goal is protecting yourself and your family, this is.

Do you teach MMA?

No. MMA is a professional combat sport between trained athletes under rules, weight classes and a referee. We are a self-defense school teaching adults, women and children how to protect themselves in situations that have none of those things.
